Latar Belakang
 Dengan perkembangan teknologi yang semakin pesat, praktisi PR pun perlu menyesuaikan diri dengannya karena media juga berperan besar dalam dunia PR. Seperti yang tertulis dalam buku Effective Public Relations edisi kesembilan karya Scott M. Cutlip, Allen H.Center dan Glen M.Brom bahwa:

“Praktisi PR menggunakan huruf, ucapan, gambar, dan kombinasi dari semua bentuk komunikasi. Mereka menggunakan baik itu media yang bisa dikontrol oleh mereka maupun yang tidak, untuk berkomunikasi dengan banyak public organisasi. Media terkontrol antara lain adalah media dimana praktisi bisa menentukan informasi apa yang akan dibuat, bagaimana pemuatannya dan kapan dimuat, serta-pada tingkat tertentu-kepada siapa berita itu ditujukan. Media yang tak bisa dikontrol adalah media dimana praktisi tidak punya peran langsung dalam penbuatan keputusan untuk isi media. Awak medialah yang memutuskan apakah suatu berita akan dimuat, apanya yang dimuat, bagaimana pemuatannya dan kapan dimuat, serta kepada siapa berita itu akan dilaporkan.”
 Tak dapat dipungkiri bahwa teknologi berdampak besar dalam kehidupan kita. Gaya hidup berubah dratis dengan adanya penemuan-penemuan baru dalam bidang teknologi. Internet merupakan perkembangan teknologi komunikasi yang sangat fenomenal. Internet membuat kita tahu sebuah informasi lebih cepat tanpa harus mendatangi tempat kejadian. Bahkan kecepatan penyaluran informasi di internet jauh lebih cepat bila dibandingkan dengan media-media tradisional seperti TV, radio, Koran dan lainnya.
 Dengan perkembangan internet ini, praktisi PR dapat memanfaatkannya untuk kegiatannya. Sehingga internet menjadi media baru bagi PR yang dianggap strategis dan mudah untuk dipergunakan. Bahkan saat ini telah muncul istilah baru yaitu E-PR yang merupakan kegiatan kehumasan yang dilakukan melalui internet.

1. Media Baru, Tantangan Baru

Internet adalah revolusi komunikasi yang sangat mendalam. Dunia digital telah mengubah komunikasi di dalam organisasi dan di antara organisasi dengan berbagai public. Pakar media-baru John Pavlik dan Shawn McInntosh mengatakan tentang perubahan “konvergensi media” sebagai berikut

 “…. Menyatunya telekomunikasi, computer dan media dalam lingkungan digital. Konvergensi dan perubahan yang dihasilkannya telah mengubah banyak aspek dasar dari media massa dan komunikasi.
